aswMBR can be used to scan for MBR/VBR/SRV rootkits on any modern Windows-powered computer. The software works quite fast and it is capable of detecting a wide array of malicious items, including ZAccess, Whistler and other forms of malware. It relies on virtualization technology to detect stealth malware, which are invisible to traditional security programs. The best part is that it takes only a minute to identify these elements if they are present on your computer.

The software is absolutely free and you can start using it right away, without going through an installation process. Downloading and running a small executable file is all you have to do. There is no need to install any prerequisite tools or to reserve too much disk space or RAM.

A simple design and a straightforward functionality are aswMBR's key features. Its user interface is basically a standard Windows Command Prompt window with a few buttons on it. Once you run the application, you only need to click the "Scan" button and it will start looking for rootkits immediately. The operation's progress can be tracked on the same window, on which you can see what files are being scanned, as well as other actions.

As previously suggested, it takes a minute or even less to complete the scanning process. The results are displayed on the same user interface and you may click a few options to save the entire log and to fix the found issues or the master boot record (MBR).

As stated on the application's interface, aswMBR is not a stand-alone cleanup utility or a fully-fledged antivirus. This is why it will offer to download and install Avast Antivirus for you, when you launch it. If you decide to install the suggested antivirus, a new option will show up on the software's interface, for performing an additional scan with the aforementioned antivirus.

Pros

aswMBR can scan for MBR, VBR and SRV rootkits. It can also detect a wide range of miscellaneous malware programs. The software doesn't need to be installed, it works fast and it is free.

Cons

There are no serious issues to point out. aswMBR can provide you with an extra line of security against rootkits.
